No guesswork

Cranking?

No crank means battery, terminals, grounds, interlocks, relay, cable voltage drop, starter control, or starter first—not fuel or spark.

Cranks but will not fire?

Confirm spark, injector pulse, fuel pressure, and believable crankshaft-position input. A 4.0L cannot run without engine-speed reference.

Runs poorly?

Separate a true single-cylinder miss from a whole-engine lean/rich condition. Vacuum, ignition condition, scan data, and fuel pressure narrow it quickly.

Only hot?

Separate actual overheating from hot-restart heat soak. Compare the gauge with scan data and an infrared thermometer rather than trusting one reading alone.

Temperature context

Many applications use a thermostat near 195°F / 90°C. The dash gauge is an indicator, not a calibration instrument. Compare scan-tool coolant temperature, thermostat housing, upper hose, radiator inlet, and outlet.

Fan engagement behavior varies by year, sensor location, calibration, A/C command, fan clutch condition, and auxiliary-fan design.

Critical 4.0L habits

Use the correct cooling-system cap, keep the radiator/pressure-bottle arrangement correct for the vehicle, and avoid random sealants. Corroded grounds, brittle vacuum elbows, old hoses, exhaust leaks near oxygen sensors, and harness heat damage are common age-related faults.
